The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity HAIRstyles of All Time

Ok, so I originally wrote this article as a guest post for an upcoming blog about beauty. It was originally supposed to go live about 6 months ago. However, the website is still under construction and I decided I didn’t want to waste the article. So here it is: The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time
——————————————————————————————

15. T-Boz

T-Boz-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

I remember when I was about 9 or 10, asking my mom if I could cut my hair exactly like hers, but of course she didn’t let me, since I had long healthy hair back then. T-Boz from girl group TLC had short hair with two long pieces in the front. She called it the “Waterfall Sideburns.” It’s almost like an old-school A-line and I’m pretty sure lots of other girls wanted this haircut back in the 90’s.

14. James Dean

James Dean-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

James Dean was the ultimate bad boy “greaser”. I’ve heard that Danny Zuko from Grease was based on him. His slicked back hair, white T-shirt and jeans look has lived on for years. To pull this off, you’d have to have a matching pack of cigarettes tucked up in your sleeve, and a ton of hair grease.

13. Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

Ms. Hepburn has always been known as such a fashion icon. Her elfin crop and short bangs were extremely popular back in the day, and people always remember her as an iconic figure. She proved to the world that short hair could also be feminine and chic.

12. Kanye West

Kanye West-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

My boyfriend’s brother convinced me to add Kanye to this list. I didn’t really think of him as having an iconic celebrity hairstyle, but it’s true. This hairstyle is extremely popular among African-American men in modern times. I’m not quite sure if people specifically ask for the “Kanye” cut, but the short, lined-up fade is a very popular haircut.

11. Will Smith

Will Smith-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

If you were a 90’s kid, you probably have seen every episode of this show and still know the theme song by heart. In the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Will Smith rocked a faded high flat-top. This style was extremely popular among African-American men in the 90’s. It was a very trendy haircut to rock. Let’s hope it never makes a return!

10. Justin Bieber
Justin Beiber

Justin Bieber has one of the most iconic hairstyles of the modern times. Although he recently cut his hair, the style lives on. I would say more than half of the teenage boy haircuts I do, are the “Biebs” cut. Although, the boys never will admit that they have the same hair as Justin Bieber, he’s the one that started the trend.

9. Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has been rocking a short bob of one type or another for the past few years. She has made the graduated bob (asymmetrical or not) a very popular trend among the women of modern times. Her hair is always very textured and flattering, and would look good on most people.

8. Jackie Kennedy

Jackie Kennedy-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

Jackie O, first lady to President Kennedy, started the S-bouffant trend that lived on through the 1960’s. Every housewife, on television or not had this same hairstyle. It looked very proper and lady-like to have a bouffant. Jackie also started various other trends like the “pillbox hat”.

7. The Beatles

beatles

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, better known as The Beatles, created an instant fashion trend when they hit the scene. It was uncommon for men to wear longer hair in those days, so it was something new and exciting. They rocked the “mop-top” haircut which was longer in the back and sides, and had straight fringe in the front. How did it start? McCartney stated in an interview, “We saw a guy in Hamburg whose hair we liked. John and I were hitchhiking to Paris. We asked him to cut our hair like he cut his.”

6. Madonna

Madonna-The 15 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

Madonna was like the Lady Gaga of the 80’s without the meat dress. She did things that were new and never seen before, which granted her instant exposure. Shortly after Madonna rose to fame, every woman rocked a bad perm and dark roots.

5. Dorothy Hamill

Dorothy Hamill

To this day, I get people in my chair asking for the Dorothy Hamill “wedge” haircut. I really didn’t know what it was at first, as she was a little before my time. It’s like a short bob haircut in the front that blends in the back. It is important to keep the weight line in the back matched up with the front. In case you don’t know who she is, she is a gold-winning figure skater from the 1976 Winter Olympics.

4. Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett “wings” is another common haircut that people still ask for today. She became super popular when she debuted on Charlie’s Angels. She was young and beautiful and so many people wanted to look like her. This hairstyle was extremely popular through the 70’s with the disco queens. Although it is not super trendy today, like it once was, it is still popular with the older crowd.

3. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston

I remember when Jennifer Aniston came out on Friends, with her very flattering face-framed haircut. My mom immediately took me to the salon to have my hair cut exactly like hers. The face frame is still in full force today. It is flattering on almost everybody’s face and it can accentuate any longer haircut.

2. Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley

When most people think of a big pompadour and long sideburns, they think of Elvis Presley. He was the king of rock and roll, and almost everyone knows who he is (I say “almost” everyone because Honey Boo Boo Child thinks Elvis works for Santa at the North Pole). There is a group of people today that still wear pompadours and sideburns, and then there are always the ever-popular Elvis impersonators. Whatever the reason is, his legacy will always live on.

1. Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is the face of glamour. She had platinum bleached-blonde hair that was always arranged into some sort of glamorous style. People have always loved her, even today. The pin-up girl style has managed to stay in style, and Marilyn Monroe is the queen. I can’t think of a time that she wouldn’t be considered beautiful, classy or elegant. Since her style has lived through more than 50 years, I imagine that she will be in style forever.

Halloween Day 6: Peek-a-boo Skeletons | hwh<3

Peek-a-boo skeleton Halloween HAIR

Today’s look is pretty easy.  I just bought some dangling skeletons (kinda like these ones, except these are cuter) from the Halloween store.  I just tied it up under my hair to give it the peek-a-boo look.  Mine were pretty big, so I would suggest maybe some smaller skeletons.  If you have big skeletons like I did, you could use some bobby pins to hold the skeleton in place.

Halloween Spider Ring Ponytail

Nothing says Halloween like Spider Rings!  This look is super simple.  I just put my hair in a ponytail and placed spider rings all around it.  Since the rings are usually split in the middle, you can just open them up and stick it around your ponytail.  Try to put as many as will fit!

Fall 2012 HAIR | hwh<3

So in honor of today (which happens to be the first day of fall), I decided to talk about fall hairstyles.

Fall HAIR

The first thing I want to talk about is fall colors.  It’s typical for people to color their hair darker in the fall and winter seasons and this is why:  If you never colored your hair, it would naturally be lighter in the summer and darker in the winter.  The sun essentially does the same thing as bleach; it disperses the color molecules in your hair.  This is why people get natural highlights when they are outside a lot in the summer.  In the winter, when it is cold, people don’t typically go outside much.  Therefore, their hair is not really affected by the sun, and tends to be darker colors.

When you think of fall colors, you think of reds, yellows, golds, oranges, etc.  If you do color your hair, I would opt for these types of colors.

Fall HAIR Colors

The next thing I want to talk about is styles that are going to be popular this fall.

Side Braids.

Side braids are ultra-popular right now.  If you don’t believe me, go look it up on Pinterest.  Pinterest will also show you some cool tutorials and different ways to wear side braids.

Side Braid- Fall 2012 HAIRstyles

Short Bobs.

I can’t say I am a huge fan of these because I think they are harsh on most people.  Nevertheless, they are popular right now.

Short Bob- Fall 2012 HAIRstyles

Short Wavy HAIR.

You will also see this and the next two all over Pinterest.

Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week! (September 17-23, 2012) | hwh<3

This week I decided to choose Nicki Minaj.  I really really like Nicki Minaj.  I downloaded her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on iTunes a few weeks ago and I really love it.  It is honestly probably the best album I have listened to in a long time.

Nicki Minaj - Pound The Alarm (Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week)

What I like about her is that she is just crazy enough to set her apart from the crowd, but not over the top like Lady Gaga.  Unfortunately, she comes with a lot of controversy.  Lyrics about her alter-ego / split personality (Roman), Mitt Romney and Lil’ Kim bashing have all added fuel to her fire.  My boyfriend says “she just makes weird noises in her music” which is partially true, but she is an amazing rapper.  I think rap is the best when they can throw together big words, especially words you don’t hear in every other rap song, give it substance, and make it sound good.  Nicki Minaj does just that.  I really loved her first album, and all the songs she did before that, but her new album is just so fun and upbeat.  The song, “Pound the Alarm” (which the picture I used is from) reminds me of laying in the sun on the top deck of a cruise ship.

So back to the main topic: her hair.  I’m pretty sure she wears wigs or weaves most of the time.  It doesn’t matter to me.  I love it.  Her hair always looks so crazy and fun.  And I particularly love her hair in the picture above.  I would imagine it is either permed or curled with a curling wand.  The top is pulled back into a poof-bang type quiff.  The key to her hair is volume, volume, volume.  It could be really teased up, and really curled, or she could just have a lot of extensions in her hair.  Whatever it is, I love it.

Watch the rest of her video!  It’s amazing!

2012 MTV Video Music Awards HAIR Recap | hwh<3

Okay, so the VMA’s are over, and you want to relive some of the moments of tonight’s wonderful show.  In this article, I am going to recap some of the famous hairstyles you saw (or maybe didn’t see).  Also, check out my MTV VMA’s Red Carpet HAIRstyle Recap to check out the pre-show styles.

Rihanna

Rihanna open the VMA’s this year performing Cockiness remixed with We Found Love.  She was rocking a new ultra-short pixie hair’do wrapped in a bandana.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry showed off her new amazing plum-colored hair, while she presented “Best Pop Video,” which stands for popular video apparently, and was won by “One Direction”.  I don’t even want to get into their hairstyles. :)

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus introducing P!nk at the MTV VMA's 2012

You didn’t think she’d skip out on showing off her new hideous  hairstyle did you?  Ironically, it’s almost identical to the person she was introducing, P!nk.

P!nk

I love her new pompadour-esque style with shaved sides.

Demi Lovato and Rita Ora

They both looked so glamorous as they presented Best Male Video, won by Chris Brown.  I love how Demi has a rocker style, while Rita looks like ultimate glamour.

She looked very trendy and cute with curly hair as she presented Frank Ocean.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj wins best female video at the 2012 MTV VMA's

I was so glad to see that Nicki won the best female video because I absolutely love her.  I think her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is pretty much the best out there right now.  Her hair is a little crazy and very Lady Gaga-esque, and it is clearly a wig.  But whatever, she rocks it.  Side note:  OMG Look at her butt!

Emma Watson

Emma Watson presents Green Day MTV VMA's 2012

I’m very pleased to see that Emma’s hair does indeed grow.  It looks so much more feminine and cute than the pixie.  I can’t wait to say the same thing for Miley.

Ke$ha

Kesha presenting at the 2012 MTV VMA's

When my boyfriend just saw Kesha present the Best New Artist award, he said “Wow.  She looks normal”.  But seriously.  She has definitely classed up her look and I love it.  She looks so glamorous and awesome.

Gabby Douglas and the Fab 5

Gabby Douglas at the 2012 MTV VMA's

Gabrielle looked amazing as always, and since her hair has been a hot topic in the last few months, she showed up with her hair completely styled.  She looks amazing as always.  The other gymnasts didn’t look too shabby either.

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys performs Girl On Fire at the MTV VMA's 2012

Alicia performed her new song “Girl On Fire” with her hair completely slicked back.

Taylor Swift

Miley showed the world first hand what her new haircut ‘could’ look like.  It’s amazing to me, how much it looks exactly like P!nk’s hair.  I just can’t say I’m a fan.

Nicki Minaj

I’m pretty sure that Lady Gaga has worn this exact same hairstyle before, but I really love Nicki so I guess it’s okay.  Plus Gaga’s didn’t have green tips!

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys showed up with her very asymmetrical bob, which looks very unflattering, in my humble opinion.

Holland’s hair was neatly pulled back into a simple, yet sleek updo.

Back-To-School HAIR | hwh<3

It’s that time of year, again: all the kiddos are getting ready to go back to school!  Shortly after, the leaves will start turning yellow and falling off, and then the cold weather will roll in.  Pretty soon, we will all complain about how cold it is, instead of how hot it is.  I always get depressed to see summer go, but as a hair stylist, back-to-school is the busiest time of year.

I decided to post the hottest hair trends for back-to-school 2012, since I know a lot of people are worried about making that great first impression.

Feathers and Multi-Colored Extensions

Feather Hair Extensions

The clip in extensions are extremely popular this year.  Celebrities like Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Britney Spears have all rocked these recently.  You can find them pretty much anywhere. You just have to clip them in up underneath your hair, so that you can’t see the clip and you are good to go.

Curled Hair

Curled Hair

To be honest, this never goes out of style.  It’s always a fun way to spruce up the hair you already have.

Braided Bangs

Braided Bangs

This style has become more and more popular over the last few months.  It’s really easy; you just have to braid your bangs and pin them to the side.  I would braid a smaller section than the girl in the picture, and would also recommend bobby pins instead of a clip.

Blunt Bangs

Blunt Bangs

Blunt bangs are also making a come-back this year.  I recently cut my bangs like this.  I think they are so cute and look really stylish.  It’s good for those people who have long hair that they don’t want to cut, but want a new look for school

Braid Wrapped Around Ponytail

Braid Wrapped Around Ponytail

This is pretty simple.  You just have to put your hair in a ponytail, and then take a piece of it and braid it.  When it is braided, you just wrap it around your ponytail and pin it with bobby pins (make sure to hide them).  This is a very stylish and very fast hairstyle for back-to-school.

Side Fishtail

Fishtail

Fishtails are very popular this year, especially when you wear them on the side like this.  I’m not quite sure how to do a fishtail, but you can search for tutorials on Google.  They are also pretty quick and very stylish.

Beach Waves

Wavy Hair

A quick, easy, age-old trick for this is to braid your hair before you go to bed.  When you wake up, just undo the braids and pick through it with your fingers.  It is awesome if you don’t have a lot of time to get ready for school.

Side Bun

Side Bun

This hairstyle is also super popular right now.  It’s pretty easy to do.  You just have to put your hair in a side ponytail and wrap you hair up in a bun.  Pin it with bobby pins and you are set.  You can play around with it and add braids or whatever you want.  Be creative!

Headbands and Accessories

Headband

I’ve seen soooo many cute headbands and accessories lately.  I want to just buy them all and wear them all the time.  They are a great way to spruce up any look.

Well now that you know the hottest trends for school this year, you are ready to go and conquer the school year.

HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures | hwh<3

Cybergoth.

Cybergoth- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Cybergoth is said to be the “Goth of the future.”   UV, progressive fashions, huge shoes and boots, wild hair extensions, goggles, cybernetics and body modifications are all typical fashion statements in the Cybergoth world.  There are really no set criteria to being Cybergoth.  The sky’s the limit.

Cyberlox are a popular hair style for this trend.  They are mostly made of tubular crin (stretchy tubes that work like finger traps).   They come in all styles and colors.  Ribbons are also added to the cyberlox a lot of times for extra style.  Most people make them themselves.

Cyberlox-HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Steampunk.

Steampunk hair-HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

The criteria for steampunk are: you have to look like you are from the 1800′s and you have to look like a robot.  This style combines Victorian era styles with a punk flare.

steampunk hair-HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Steampunk hairstyles are typically made to look like an old-fashioned updo.  Back in those days, ladies were proper and always looked their best.  This needs to be incorporated into the steampunk look.

steampunk-HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Gyaru.

gyaru gals-HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Gyaru translates to the world “Gal” in Japanese.  This trend was called Ganguro originally, which means “black face”.  It is a popular style that originates from Japan.  Girls usually have blonde, white or silver hair, with different neon colors mixed in it.  They also paint themselves orange/tan and pack on a lot of crazy white make up.

It has become popular in other places besides Japan, and has been incorporated into other styles.

Ganguro - HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Cosplay.

cosplay- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

cosplay- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Cosplay is short for “costume play”.  The focus is to try to dress like a specific character or idea.  Most of the time, this is associated with Anime, Manga, comic books and video games.

cosplay

Women typically wear long hair wigs.

cosplay wig- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Men typically have short spiky, crazy hair.  Like Ash Ketchum (if you know who that is).

But once again, they are trying to be dressed like a certain character, so I guess there is really no set style.

Bronies and Pegasisters.

This trend is really disturbing, in my opinion.  People (mostly males in their 20′s) have built an obsession with “My Little Pony” and try to dress like that.  I guess to recreate their hairstyle, buy a wig?

Bronies- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Lolita.

lolitas- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Lolita is also a trend from Japan, and it almost combines Gyaru with Steampunk.  The girls dress like they are from the Victorian era and look very prim and proper.  Their hair is usually made of wigs, although sometimes their natural hair is used.

lolitas- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Furries.

Furries- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

My little brother is a furry, and I always thought it was kinda weird.  Furries are people who dress like animals with human characteristics. Furry conventions are held, where you can attend and mingle with other people dressed like animals.

Furries- HAIRstyles of Unusual, yet Popular Subcultures

Typically, if you want furry hair, you either have to wear a costume, or a hat or headband with ears attached.  A lot of people have animal face masks that they wear also.

Do you know of any other unusual subcultures that I did not list?  Please leave feedback in the comments.

Typical HAIRstyles for Your Face Shape

Is your face shape Oval, Rectangle, Round, Square, Heart, and Triangle?  Oval is said to be the “perfect” shape, or so they taught me in beauty school.  To find out what face shape you have, read What Shape is Your Face? How to Tell.

The objective here is to make each face shape look oval with the use of highlighting, shading and perspective.  In this article, I would like to share with you some hairstyles that look good on the different face shapes.

Face Shapes

If you have an Oval-Shaped Face:

Jennifer Aniston has an Oval-Shaped Face

Congratulations! You can pretty much wear any type of hairstyle! Every other face shape will try to make their face look like yours.

You want to stick to layers around your cheekbones, chin or lips, depending on what you want to accentuate. Why do you think that Jennifer Aniston has had this hairstyle for a million years? Because it works! And it’s amazing!

She has long layers on her cheekbones and chin, and her hair is longer in the back then in the front which lightens up her face.

If you have a Round Face:

Jessica Biel has a round face.
The objective here is to deflect away from the roundness. Long hair is a great hairstyle on round faces because they make the face appear to be longer. The best haircuts for round faces will fall below the chin.

Long layers will help narrow the face, as shorter layers will add body and height, making the face appear rounder.

Waves are also a good touch, since they draw attention away from the roundness of the face.

If you have a Rectangular-Shaped Face:

Paris Hilton has a rectangle-shaped face.

The objective here is to soften the strong jaw line.

You don’t want a hairstyle with a lot of weight on your jaw line, so blunt cuts around your jaw are never recommended. Middle parts and blunt bangs will also make your face look squarer.

A thin layered bob is probably your best bet. Side bangs are also a must for this face shape!

If you have a Square Face:

Megan Fox has a square face shape.

Like rectangular faces, the objective is to soften the jaw line.

They say that people with square faces take the best photographs. They can get away with long hair better than any other type of face shape.  A long hairstyle is good with square faces, and soft hairstyles are even better. If you want short hair, be sure to keep it really soft and layered.

If you have a Heart-Shaped Face:

Reese Witherspoon has a heart-shaped face.

The objective here is to add length to the face and create width around narrow chins.

Heart shaped faces go well with almost any type of hairstyle. Reese Witherspoon is very well-known for her heart-shaped face, and she has pulled off everything from short bobs to long wavy hair.

The side-swept bangs look very flattering on heart-shaped faces. Bangs in general look good on heart-shaped faces.

Long bobs (lobs), side-parts, and face framing all work good for this type of face.

The one thing you don’t want to do is make your face appear wider then it is. Once again, bangs help this.

If you have a Triangle-Shaped Face:

Victoria Beckham has a Triangle-Shaped Face.

The objective here is to narrow the chin and widen the forehead.

Shorter is better.  Short hairstyles look the best on people with triangular-shaped faces. Layers, especially at the jaw line will help flatter your face.

You want to avoid anything that will draw attention to your jaw line, like blunt bobs and face framing.

Do you have any particular hairstyles that look good for any face shapes?  I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
