Hair Snips #4: Steri-Dri Fumigant
Have you ever wondered what Steri-Dri Fumigant is?
State board laws are not really my forte, but I do know that in Nevada, every cupboard or cabinet in a salon, that houses implements, towels, etc. needs to contain a little jar of Steri-Dri Fumigant. I never really knew what it was though. When I wanted to do some research on this product, information is hard to come by, so I hope this helps anyone interested!
It is considered a dry sanitizer, meaning that it will sanitize anything in the same cupboard with it for 24 hours. It will kill different forms of fungus and bacteria.
To use it, you only have to uncap it and place it in the cupboard, cabinet, etc.
The main ingredient is Paraformaldehyde, which releases formaldehyde to kill unwanted organisms. The other two ingredients, listed on the label as “inert ingredients- 37.7%” are Camphor (used in moth balls, probably used in Steri-Dri to keep insects away), and Zinc Sterate (unknown use). I also know that it is not sold in California.
Steri-Dri Fumigant is manufactured by Noble Pine Products Co. in Yonkers, NY, and sold through Marianna Industries. It’s only official website is at http://www.sterifab.com/steridri.html. It is EPA registered at # 00039700006 . To read its MSDS, click here.
This product is only good for 6 months, so it needs to be replaced often. However, the price has seemed to jump in the last few years. If anyone can confirm this or explain why, that would be amazing!

People (women in particular) are always concerned about their hair. They always need to figure out what color, style and cut would look best on them, and they need to find the best products to make their hair perfect.
However, there is one thing that you don’t hear girls talk about very often: What your hair can tell you about your health. Examining your hair can tell you about as much as about your health as a doctor.
*(I’m not a doctor though, so I would always consult with your physician if you really think something is wrong with your health)
Hair Loss:
The average person sheds 40-120 strands of hair a day, and that number increases as we get older.
However, if you are losing more hair than that, something can be seriously wrong. Losing more than 100-200 strands per day could be a sign of stress, low iron levels, lack of protein or thyroid problems. Diabetes and flu can also cause dramatic hair loss.
If hair is coming out by the hand-full, you should consult a doctor.
Dull and Dry Hair:
I’m not talking about hair that is damaged from heat or chemicals. I’m talking about hair that is otherwise healthy but always appears to be dry and or dull.
This could be a sign that you are lacking essential fatty acids or certain minerals such as zinc, silica or iron from your diet. This can also be a sign of an under-active thyroid gland.
Other signs of hypothyroidism are weight gain, fatigue, slow heart rate, and feeling cold all the time.
Oily Hair:
Although this can be caused by genetics, oily hair is generally caused by over-active sebaceous glands in the scalp. This is caused by hormonal imbalance.
Slow-Growing Hair:
This can be caused by a variety of things like genetics and seasons, but it can also be from poor diet and stress.
Dandruff:
Dandruff can easily be treated with medicated shampoo, most of the time. However, if it is an excessive problem, that won’t go away, it could be a bigger problem. It could be caused by nutrient deficiency like zinc, vitamin C or essential fatty acids. It could also be a fungal overgrowth, or over-activity of the sebaceous glands in the scalp.
Hair in Weird Places:
If you are a woman and you are growing hair in places that only men should grow it, it could be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome. This could lead to infertility and other problems so it is important to see a doctor.
Other symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome include acne, obesity, and irregular periods.
