Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week! (October 1-7, 2012) | hwh<3

This week I chose Ellen Degeneres for my Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week!

Ellen Degeneres HAIR 2012

One of my favorite customers always gets her hair cut like Ellen, and she specifically asked me to write a post about her hair.

There is not really a whole lot to her hair.  It is short, tapered in the back, with the ears cut out.  However, it is longer on top, so it looks more femenine.  The top has a ton of texture.  I’m pretty sure it was cut with a razor.

She just styles it with a messy spikey look and probably uses some texture hold products.

To wrap this post up, I want to share a funny video of Ellen and Britney Spears Christmas Caroling!

Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week! (September 24-30, 2012) | hwh<3

Even though I have already chosen her before, I decided to choose Britney Spears again for this week.

Britney Spears IheartRadio Music Festival September 21, 2012 Las Vegas, NV

She presented with Ryan Seacrest a few days ago at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.  I really like how she wore her hair.  Not only is the dip-dye look super trendy right now, but so is the vibrant multi-colors..

To get hair like hers, you can either dip-dye your hair with real color, or you can use hair chalk to make the same effect, temporarily.

Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week! (September 17-23, 2012) | hwh<3

This week I decided to choose Nicki Minaj.  I really really like Nicki Minaj.  I downloaded her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on iTunes a few weeks ago and I really love it.  It is honestly probably the best album I have listened to in a long time.

Nicki Minaj - Pound The Alarm (Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week)

What I like about her is that she is just crazy enough to set her apart from the crowd, but not over the top like Lady Gaga.  Unfortunately, she comes with a lot of controversy.  Lyrics about her alter-ego / split personality (Roman), Mitt Romney and Lil’ Kim bashing have all added fuel to her fire.  My boyfriend says “she just makes weird noises in her music” which is partially true, but she is an amazing rapper.  I think rap is the best when they can throw together big words, especially words you don’t hear in every other rap song, give it substance, and make it sound good.  Nicki Minaj does just that.  I really loved her first album, and all the songs she did before that, but her new album is just so fun and upbeat.  The song, “Pound the Alarm” (which the picture I used is from) reminds me of laying in the sun on the top deck of a cruise ship.

So back to the main topic: her hair.  I’m pretty sure she wears wigs or weaves most of the time.  It doesn’t matter to me.  I love it.  Her hair always looks so crazy and fun.  And I particularly love her hair in the picture above.  I would imagine it is either permed or curled with a curling wand.  The top is pulled back into a poof-bang type quiff.  The key to her hair is volume, volume, volume.  It could be really teased up, and really curled, or she could just have a lot of extensions in her hair.  Whatever it is, I love it.

Watch the rest of her video!  It’s amazing!

2012 MTV Video Music Awards HAIR Recap | hwh<3

Okay, so the VMA’s are over, and you want to relive some of the moments of tonight’s wonderful show.  In this article, I am going to recap some of the famous hairstyles you saw (or maybe didn’t see).  Also, check out my MTV VMA’s Red Carpet HAIRstyle Recap to check out the pre-show styles.

Rihanna

Rihanna 2012 MTV VMA performing cockiness and we found love. Short pixie haircut and bandana.

Rihanna open the VMA’s this year performing Cockiness remixed with We Found Love.  She was rocking a new ultra-short pixie hair’do wrapped in a bandana.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry presenting Best Pop Video 2012 MTV VMA with plum-colored hair.

Katy Perry showed off her new amazing plum-colored hair, while she presented “Best Pop Video,” which stands for popular video apparently, and was won by “One Direction”.  I don’t even want to get into their hairstyles. :)

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus introducing P!nk at the MTV VMA's 2012

You didn’t think she’d skip out on showing off her new hideous  hairstyle did you?  Ironically, it’s almost identical to the person she was introducing, P!nk.

P!nk

P!nk performing her new song Blow Me (One Last Kiss) 2012 VMA's

I love her new pompadour-esque style with shaved sides.

Demi Lovato and Rita Ora

They both looked so glamorous as they presented Best Male Video, won by Chris Brown.  I love how Demi has a rocker style, while Rita looks like ultimate glamour.

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana presenting Frank Ocean 2012 MTV VMA's

She looked very trendy and cute with curly hair as she presented Frank Ocean.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj wins best female video at the 2012 MTV VMA's

I was so glad to see that Nicki won the best female video because I absolutely love her.  I think her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is pretty much the best out there right now.  Her hair is a little crazy and very Lady Gaga-esque, and it is clearly a wig.  But whatever, she rocks it.  Side note:  OMG Look at her butt!

Emma Watson

Emma Watson presents Green Day MTV VMA's 2012

I’m very pleased to see that Emma’s hair does indeed grow.  It looks so much more feminine and cute than the pixie.  I can’t wait to say the same thing for Miley.

Ke$ha

Kesha presenting at the 2012 MTV VMA's

When my boyfriend just saw Kesha present the Best New Artist award, he said “Wow.  She looks normal”.  But seriously.  She has definitely classed up her look and I love it.  She looks so glamorous and awesome.

Gabby Douglas and the Fab 5

Gabby Douglas at the 2012 MTV VMA's

Gabrielle looked amazing as always, and since her hair has been a hot topic in the last few months, she showed up with her hair completely styled.  She looks amazing as always.  The other gymnasts didn’t look too shabby either.

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys performs Girl On Fire at the MTV VMA's 2012

Alicia performed her new song “Girl On Fire” with her hair completely slicked back.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift 2012 MTV VMA performs We are never getting back together

Taylor Swift closed the show with a slicked back ponytail and bangs (which are also part of the The 5 Most Popular HAIRstyles of 2012).  She sang her new song, We are never ever getting back together.

2012 MTV VMA’s Red Carpet HAIRstyle Recap | hwh<3

It’s that time of year again!  You know, the time of  year we all wait for, to see what Lady Gaga is wearing and if Taylor Swift is rocking curly or straight hair?  Yeah, you know what I’m talking about.  The MTV Video Music Awards.  Everyone who’s anyone is there and so we get to see all of our favorite celebrities in one place.  In this article, I am going to recap some of the best red carpet styles for the VMA’s.    So here goes…..

P!nk

Pink has always been known for having edgy, short hair.  Tonight she is rocking a pompadour-type style with her sides and back shaved.

Taylor Swift

Ms. Swift showed off her new look, which involves super straight hair.  I must say, I really miss her gorgeous curls.

Miley Cyrus

Miley showed the world first hand what her new haircut ‘could’ look like.  It’s amazing to me, how much it looks exactly like P!nk’s hair.  I just can’t say I’m a fan.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj 2012 MTV VMA yellow HAIR

I’m pretty sure that Lady Gaga has worn this exact same hairstyle before, but I really love Nicki so I guess it’s okay.  Plus Gaga’s didn’t have green tips!

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys asymmetrical bob 2012 MTV VMA's

Alicia Keys showed up with her very asymmetrical bob, which looks very unflattering, in my humble opinion.

Ke$ha

Kesha's new hair at the 2012 MTV VMA's

Kesha showed off a new platinum glamorous look.  It appears  that she wants to class it up a little bit.

Amber Rose

Amber had a super short, super blonde ‘do this year.

Emma Watson

Kat Graham

Kat Graham showed us what her hair looks like when it’s not in a tight ponytail.  I really like it a lot better this way.

Sammy “Sweetheart” Giancola

Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola MTV VMA's 2012

You didn’t think you’d escape Jersey Shore this year did you?  Sammi is showing off her long luscious locks, but we all know it’s a weave.

Holland Roden

Teen Wolf's Holland Roden MTV VMA 2012 Red Carpet

Holland’s hair was neatly pulled back into a simple, yet sleek updo.

Jessica Szhor

I really loved Jessica’s hair!  I’m a huge fan of scarf headbands.

The Most Iconic HAIRstyles of the Last 100 Years! | hwh<3

At any point in time, people thought they had the most awesome hairstyles.  But now, we look back at hairstyles of the past and thank the good lord that we didn’t live in that time period.  Personally, I love all hairstyles of the different time frames.  It is so interesting to see how everything has evolved over the years.  My boyfriend actually came up with the idea for this article and I loved it, so I decided to write it right away.  I present to you: The Most Iconic HAIRstyles of the Last 100 Years!

1910′s – Wide Brimmed Hats.

1910's HAIRstyles- Wide Brimmed Hat

In the 1910′s, large wide brim hats that cover some of the face were extremely popular, especially in the earlier parts of the decade.  Through the later part of the decade, smaller hats with flat brims became popular.  Short bobs along with fake long hair (wigs, extensions, etc) were also popular.

1920′s – Flapper HAIR.

1920's Flapper HAIRstyle

This era is nicknamed the “roaring twenties”.  Flappers became popular in the twenties and it became popular for women to look more manly.  This has a lot to do with the women’s rights movement that took place in the twenties.  Women cut their hair short, flattened their chests and redefined what women should do.  Flappers were known to bare skin, dance in jazz clubs all night, drink and smoke cigarettes, which were all very provocative in that time.  They also created one of the most iconic styles of all time.

1930′s- Finger Waves.

1930's Fingerwaves HAIRstyle

I will admit to you right  now that when I was in beauty school, I promised myself that I would never love finger waves.  We had to perform them on our doll heads once a month and sometimes more.  I had an older teacher named Norma Jean, who was really good at finger waves, and she would make me redo them over and over again until they were perfect.  On a side note, a good way to make them hold is to put shampoo in the hair, instead of gel, and allow it to dry.

Anyways, now I love finger waves.  I think they look so classy and elegant.  I love seeing the celebrities in Hollywood wearing them to events.  But in the 1930′s this trend carried over from the 20′s.  The main difference is that after the great depression started to hit, women started dressing like women again.  It became more common to see a finger wave on longer hair than on a short little bob.

1940′s- Victory Rolls.

1940's Victory Rolls HAIRstyle

Victory rolls became very popular in the 1940′s.  The 40′s were about looking elegant, yet practical.  Longer hair and soft curls became popular.  After WWII, there was a shortage of metal, so women began using pipe cleaners to curl their hair.  The name “victory rolls” is said to have come from one of three things.  First, everything felt so victorious for women then.  They were working outside of their home to help the men at war, and it 1945, the war ended and the men came home.  It meant victory for the women.  The second theory, is that the rolls look like a V, when pinned up properly.  The third theory is that it was named after a maneuver that the planes from the war did.  Wherever it came from, we know that it was directly connected to the war.

1950′s- Glamorous HAIR.

1950's Glamorous HAIR- Marilyn Monroe

It is hard to distinguish one particular hairstyle that was popular during the 1950′s.  This was the heyday for some of the most iconic celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor and many more.  How do you pick just one good hairstyle when there were so many great hairstyles?  All I know is that it was about glamour, and to this day, this look never gets old.

1960′s- Hippie HAIR AND Jackie O ‘S’ Bouffant.

1960's Hippie HAIRstyle

When I think about the 60′s, I always think about hippies.  Thanks to the Beatles, it became extremely popular for not only the women to have long, natural hair, but also for the men to have the same style.  Hippies were about dropping acid being who they are and embracing their naturalness, or something like that.  They usually didn’t do much to their hair.  They just grew it out and wore a headband or bandana.

Unfortunately for this article, I also equally think about the S bouffant, made popular thanks to Jacqueline Kennedy.

1960's Jackie Kennedy S-Bouffant Hairstyle

Besides being known as first lady to President Kennedy, Jackie O was also a huge fashion icon.  She was elegant and so fashionable.  She introduced other trends such as the pillbox hat.

1970′s- Disco Fever.

1970s Farrah Fawcett Disco Hairstyle

Everything was about disco in the 70′s.  It was so trendy to wear polyester and bell-bottoms.  The main hairstyle for disco queens?  Farrah Fawcett hair.  I still get people in my chair every once in a while that ask for this look.  It was extremely popular in the 70′s.

1980′s- Madonna HAIR.

1980s Madonna Like a Virgin Hairstyle

When Madonna first hit the scene in the 80′s, she was basically like the Lady Gaga of that time.  She did so many things that were unseen before her*cough* pointy bra *cough* and that quickly drew a lot of attention to her.  It wasn’t long before everyone had bad perms and hair that was back-combed straight up.

1990′s- Jennifer Aniston Face Frame.

1990's Jennifer Aniston Face Frame Hairstyle

I totally remember as soon as she came out on “Friends” wearing her face frame haircut, everybody wanted their hair to look like hers.  My mom even had my hair cut like hers.  It is still really popular today, as it is very flattering to anyone’s face.

2000′s- Wavy Extensions, and Flat HAIR.

2000's Britney Spears Femme Fatale Tour Wavy HAIR Extensions  2000's hair Christina Aguilera Flat Ironed HAIRstyle

Ahhh, back to our comfort zone.  I chose Britney and Christina, because they were among the most iconic people in the 2000′s.  Wavy hair extensions and flat-ironed hair are the two most common hairstyles that I can think of within the last 10 years.

Are there any famous hairstyles I missed?  Leave them in the comments!

Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week (August 17- September 2, 2012) | hwh<3

Welcome to the blonde side, Kim!!!!

I decided to chose Kim Kardashian this week for my Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week.

She tweeted pictures on Friday of her new blonde ombre ‘do.

Kim Kardashian New Blonde Ombre Hair

Although they are not really good pictures, she did post a few other pictures since then, but her hair does not look blonde in them.

Kim Kardashian Ombre Blonde Hair

Even Kim is confused why her newer pics don’t appear to be blonde.

Kim Kardashian Twitter #confused "Not sure why my hair looks so light in some pics and dark in others"

Either way, I definitely like the blonde.  I always support blonde hair and I think blondes have more fun!

This isn’t the first time.  She’s had blonde hair before and it looked amazing.

Tabatha’s Salon Takeover | hwh<3

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover is pretty much the best show ever.  Tabatha Coffey, who is a world-renowned hairstylist, goes to failing salons that have asked for her help, and well, takes over.  She works every aspect of professionalism and helps turn the salon around, so it can move in the right direction.  She is seriously so smart, talented and professional and is totally my hair stylist role model (although I don’t think I would ever want her critiquing my work).  She is very upfront and can be a total Btch with a capital B.  Usually though, she is only smart with the people who are not willing to change and are giving her lip.

Tabatha Coffey

I’m seriously addicted to this show.  It’s probably the one show that I am faithful to watching.  In fact, I’m about to start an episode on my DVR right now.  I have learned a lot of really cool things from watching her show, like that you should never fold foils on the sides.  This is because bleach expands, and if the foils are tightly folded, it has nowhere to expand except up, creating a bleed line.  Another cool trick I learned from her, that I use daily, is that color will remove color on the skin.  You just use a little bit of leftover color from the bowl and rub it on the stain and it will take it off.  I have no idea whatsoever how it works, but it does work.  If you are a fellow hairstylist, I suggest checking it out.  You can seriously learn a lot from Tabatha.

Another thing you can learn from her show is what NOT to do.  Many of these salons make really common mistakes, which I have seen in almost every salon I’ve worked at.  Not cleaning, non-professional conversation, inappropriate clothes, micromanagement, failure to keep records, alcohol drinking, etc. are all things that happen in most of these salons.  There are a few extreme cases, where people go overboard.  A manager of one of the salons had a sex toy in his drawer called the “bitch tamer.”  He stated that he handed the toy to any people in a bad mood and told them to take it to the bathroom and come back out in a better mood.  How crazy and unprofessional is that!?  I can’t even imagine.  Some of the owners are like, seriously schizophrenic.  They are so crazy; how can you blame their staff for not respecting them?  I watched one episode where the salon housed a stripper pole for customers.  For every minute they danced on the pole, 1 dollar was taken off their total bill.  The only thing that it did was give away free services and make people feel uncomfortable.  Don’t worry though.  Tabatha whipped all those people right into shape.

Tabatha Coffey

Tabatha Coffey was born on May 17, 1969 in Surfers Paradise, Australia.  Both her mom and brother were hairstylists, and she got her first job in a salon as an assistant at the age of 14.  At 15, she entered a four year apprenticeship to study hair, and followed up with three more years of training in London.  On the opening credits of Tabatha Takes Over, she states “I’ve devoted everything I have to this industry.  I love it.”

She eventually opened her own salon in Ridgewood, New Jersey, called “Industrie Hair Gurus,” while also working sometimes at the “Warren-Tricomi Salon” in West Hollywood, CA.  She also casually mentions in the opening credits, “My salon is so successful, there’s a 3 month waiting list to get an appointment with me.”  Her artistic style includes creating a unique look for every single person, instead of specializing in one certain style.  On top of that, she travels the world 6-12 times a year, representing Joico International, as a platform stylist.  She loves to show off her talent during these hair shows, along with helping other aspiring stylists.  She admitted, “My favorite thing is to do work with other professionals and teaching.  I love giving and getting back from other professionals.”  She recently sold her salon to make time to work with other stylists.  Eventually, she became the star of her own television show and the author of her own book called It’s Not Really About The Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty.  Her work is also featured in beauty publications like Seventeen, Marie Claire and Mademoiselle.

She is open about being part of the LGBT community and has shared that she has been with her partner for over 15 years.  She doesn’t talk about it all the time, because she feels it’s inappropriate, but she has never hidden the fact that she is a lesbian.

Out of curiosity, she applied to be on the show Shear Genius, in which 11 people are eliminated through challenges, revealing the best stylist.  Although Tabatha didn’t win, she made it to the top 6 and later won $10,000 and the “fan favorite” title.  She was most known for her mouthy, blunt attitude.  Her show, Tabatha Takes Over was a spin-off of Shear Genius.

During the course of the show, she takes the salon from “failing” to “ready to succeed.”  She first sets up hidden surveillance cameras, and watches the salon from a distance.  Then after observing everything, she brings the manager in to talk to them about what is going on.  She also shows them the lowest points she saw on surveillance.  After being fed up, she will say to the manager “Give me your key.  I’m taking over.”  Next, Tabatha and the manager enter the salon and talk to the staff.  Usually on the first day the staff is so excited to have her there.  She informs them that everything is going to change in her presence, and at the end of the week, some of them may not have jobs.  She inspects the salon (which is usually covered in dust and hair) and plainly lets them know how disgusting it is.  She will tell them to come back in the morning for a staff meeting.  During the staff meeting, she addressed all of the problems with management.  The manager is never present at the meeting so the staff usually feels comfortable to tell Tabatha their problems.  She then talks again with the management and asks for their point of view.  The next day, she will bring in live models for the whole salon to work on and assesses their work based on consultation, formulation and how they followed through.  This is when people start to get frustrated.  She usually spends a day or two making the salon do things to promote the salon or better their skills.  Towards the end of the episode, she remodels the entire salon.  The staff and management return to see the new salon and have a grand opening with Tabatha there.  Tabatha observes every little thing and makes note if people didn’t take her advice.  She finally, speaks one last time with management to give them her final recommendations.  They announce to the salon what was good and bad, and Tabatha returns the salon key.  She comes back 6 weeks later to check up on the salon.  Most of the time, the salon has improved, but sometimes old habits die hard.

Reruns of this show airs on Bravo.  They are currently filming season 5, and it is unknown when it will premiere.

What do you think of Tabatha Coffey?  Leave your comments!

Miley Cyrus New HAIR | hwh<3

Oh no!  Miley, what did you do?!?

Yesterday, Miley Cyrus decided to cut all of her hair off.  I can’t begin to imagine why.

She first, tweeted this pic:

Miley's HAIR getting cut off

Shortly after, she tweeted “if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all. my hair is attached to my head no one else’s and it’s going bye bye :)”.

She, then, started tweeting pictures of her new ‘do.

Miley Cyrus New HAIR surfaces twitter

I can’t say that I absolutely love it.  It is something totally different and definitely hit the world with a shock factor.  It looks decent, but in her main profile pic, you can see that it is completely un-blended, which drives me nuts.

Miley Cyrus New Short Hair

How ironic, that I just watched her movie, LOL, last night (which is jam-packed with plot), and was thinking to myself about how pretty her hair was.  She seems to really like her new haircut though, and that’s good because it’s her image, not ours.  She followed up with tweets like “most successful Sally day EVER! ❤❤❤ I feel pretty ohhhh so pretty and gayyyy,” “Never felt more me in my whole life ❤,” “LOVE my hair ❤ feel so happy, pretty, and free”, and “❤❤❤ feeling so happy in my skin.”

What do you think about Miley’s new hair?  Leave your opinions in the comments.

Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week! (August 6-12, 2012) | hwh<3

I decided to choose Gabrielle Douglas this week for my Celeb HAIRstyle of the Week!  Even though last week I chose an Olympian and I already posted an article about Gabby’s hair, it really bothers me that she is being so ridiculed.

Gabby Douglas' Hair

Gabby Douglas Hair

To be honest with you, I usually don’t care too much about sports or even the Olympics, but for some reason, I feel really drawn to Gabby.  Her story is just so amazing and I love how she moves on her floor routine.  She has all this charisma, charm, and grace all packed into her tiny body.

Watch this video, and tell me it doesn’t give you the chills:

Anyways, I have watched so many interviews with her and her family, all of her Olympic routines and a bunch of other footage and I have really never understood what the problem with her hair was.  Don’t get me wrong; I’m obviously not African-American, and I don’t really get many opportunities to work with black hair since there are not too many African-Americans where I live, so I guess it really isn’t my forte.  However, I STILL don’t see any problems with her hair.

I understand that her hair is slicked back and doesn’t look its best while she is performing, but have you ever looked at any of the other gymnasts’ hair when they perform?  They all do the same thing.  There is a reason for it.

Gabby’s mother, Natalie Hawkins stated in an interview question about her daughter’s hair, “When I first saw that, I was confused, because I was looking at the pictures and I’m thinking, ‘I’m missing it,’ ’cause I don’t see what they’re talking about.  I mean, she doesn’t have fly-aways all stickin’ out.  It’s not like it’s, ya know all over her head. It’s pulled back into that ponytail.  And I guess a lot of people don’t realize sometimes when you put the hair in the bun, because they’re tumbling, and the speed at which you’re tumbling is so fast, a lot of times, it just spins right out.  And if it’s too long, it’ll whip you in the face, or can catch you in the eye.  People call it the messy ponytail, but you know how they pull it through, but they don’t pull it all the way through, and it stops at a certain point.  But that keeps it from moving.  But a lot of people don’t realize that.”

Dominique Dawes replied “And I’ve actually entered a lot of questions about that, and as an athlete, you are not focused on your appearance or you’re not gonna make those achievements, and those historic achievements that your daughter has been able to make.”

Hawkins also talks about how everyone talks about natural (African) hair and how people have always tried to convince her to go natural.

Anyways, I think she has beautiful hair, and it looks really cute and pretty when she is not performing.  Once again, I’m not that skilled with African hair, but I believe that she just flat-irons it and has no relaxer or extensions.  She is a beautiful girl and has awesome hair!

If you don’t like her hair, focus on the other good stuff she has accomplished.

What do you think about Gabby’s hair?  Leave feedback in the comments.
